Piercing Aftercare: Swimming and Beach Tips for Portimão Residents

20 May 2026Positive Vibrations

Got a new piercing in Portimão? Learn when it's safe to swim, how to protect it at the beach, and essential aftercare tips for the Algarve climate.

Piercing Aftercare Basics

Whether it's a delicate ear lobe stud or a bold septum ring, a new piercing requires consistent care. At Positive Vibrations Tattoo Studio in Portimão, we provide professional piercings with a focus on safe, clean healing. Here's your complete aftercare guide.

The First 48 Hours

Your new piercing is a puncture wound. Treat it with respect during the first two days.

  • Do not touch the piercing without washing your hands first.
  • Do not twist or rotate the jewellery — this was old advice and is no longer recommended.
  • Clean the piercing twice a day with a sterile saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride).
  • Avoid sleeping on the pierced area.

When Can I Swim After a Piercing?

This is one of the most common questions we get, especially from clients visiting the Algarve's beaches.

  • Ear and facial piercings: Wait at least 6–8 weeks before swimming in the sea or pool.
  • Cartilage piercings (helix, tragus, daith, rook): These take longer to heal — wait at least 3 months before swimming.
  • Body piercings (navel, nipple): Wait a minimum of 3 months.
  • The sea vs. the pool: Both carry risks. Pool chlorine dries out the healing tissue, while sea water carries bacteria. Avoid both during healing.

Saline Soaks: The Gold Standard

The best aftercare for any piercing is a saline soak. Here's how:

  • Soak a clean cotton pad in sterile saline solution.
  • Hold it gently against the piercing for 3–5 minutes.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
  • Repeat twice a day for the full healing period.

Algarve-Specific Tips

Living in Portimão means dealing with sun, heat, and beach life — all of which can affect a healing piercing.

  • Sun: Avoid direct sun on the piercing for the first 2 weeks. UV rays cause inflammation and can darken the skin around the piercing.
  • Heat: Sweat can irritate the piercing. Clean more frequently during hot days.
  • Sand: Sand particles can get trapped in a healing piercing. Keep it covered at the beach.

Signs of Infection

Some redness and swelling is normal in the first few days. Contact Positive Vibrations or a medical professional if you notice:

  • Severe or worsening redness beyond the first week
  • Thick yellow or green discharge
  • Fever or chills
  • Increasing pain rather than decreasing pain

Healing Times by Piercing Type

  • Ear lobe: 6–8 weeks
  • Helix / cartilage: 6–12 months
  • Tragus / daith / rook: 6–9 months
  • Septum: 6–8 weeks
  • Nostril: 2–4 months
  • Navel: 6–12 months

Patience is key. Even when a piercing looks healed on the surface, the inside is still repairing. Following these aftercare guidelines ensures your piercing heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime.
