Sun Exposure: The #1 Tattoo Killer
UV rays don't just fade healing tattoos — they fade healed ones too. But during the healing phase, the risk is far greater.
- Keep your fresh tattoo completely covered (with loose clothing) for the first 2 weeks.
- Never apply sunscreen to a healing tattoo — the chemicals can irritate the open wound.
- Once fully healed (after 3–4 weeks), apply SPF 50+ every single time you go outside. No exceptions.
- Consider UV-protective clothing for beach days — it's the most reliable barrier.
Swimming: When Can You Hit the Beach?
Praia da Rocha is right on our doorstep, and we know the temptation. But swimming with a fresh tattoo is one of the fastest ways to ruin it.
- Pools: Chlorine can cause chemical burns on healing skin. Wait at least 3–4 weeks.
- The sea: Salt water sounds natural, but the Algarve's Atlantic waters carry bacteria and sand particles. Wait 3–4 weeks minimum.
- Showers: Fine from day one — just use lukewarm water and don't let the spray hit the tattoo directly.
Heat and Sweating
Algarve summers regularly hit 30°C+. Heat causes your pores to open and sweat to increase, both of which can affect healing.
- Avoid intense exercise for the first week — sweat introduces bacteria.
- Stay hydrated. Well-hydrated skin heals faster.
- Keep the tattoo in a cool, dry environment when possible.
Clothing Tips for the Algarve
Tight clothing traps heat and rubs against the tattoo. Opt for loose, breathable cotton or linen — perfect for the Algarve climate anyway.
